Chronic pain (long term) can be the result of a medical condition or there may be no obvious cause. It can often help to be as mobile as possible, gentle exercise such as yoga, swimming, walking can be beneficial, it is however, important to listen to your body and also to consult with your doctor beforehand. ​ Stress and anxiety are often experienced alongside pain and can often make your pain feel worse. If there is any credible evidence that your body is in danger and you need to do something to protect it then the likelihood and intensity of pain will increase. If there is credible evidence that your body is safe then this will decrease the likelihood and intensity of pain. In some cases of chronic pain your body becomes over sensitive, so the need for true protection is distorted and we over protect our body by signalling more pain than is actually needed to protect it.

When you are anxious and/or in pain your body becomes tense, this makes the pain worse, you then become fearful and the cycle continues. When you are in a relaxed state you feel safe and calm, you let go of tension in your muscles, you relax your nervous system and this helps it to become less reactive to pain. Hypnosis is used to reduce your stress and anxiety and install positive thought patterns which can make a difference to your perception of pain.

Distraction is also a way to help you manage your pain and often in hypnotherapy we use visualisation to give your mind something else to think about, you use all your senses in your imagination to see, hear, smell, taste and feel somewhere pleasant and relaxing for you.
